What Makes a Classic Car Iconic? While beauty is in the eye of the beholder, some classic cars have undoubtedly made a bigger impact than others. Truly iconic classic cars are not only popular -– they also often influence the way people perceive cars. This might be because of an association with a famous person; such is the case with the Shelby Cobra. Or it might be because of an appearance in a TV show or movie, like the 1969 Dodge Charger in The Dukes of Hazzard or the 1977 Firebird Trans Am in Smokey and the Bandit. The point is that iconic classic cars transcend space and time. They’re instantly recognizable and there will always be a market for them.
What are the Most Iconic Classic Cars?Of course, popularity plays a huge role in determining what is and is not an iconic classic car. A few years ago, classiccars.com conducted a survey that tracked the most searched-for classic cars on their site. According to their poll, the five most “popular” classic cars of all time are:
- 1969 Dodge Charger.
- 1967 Ford Mustang.
- 1969 Chevrolet Camaro.
- 1965 Ford Mustang.
- 1965 Ford Mustang Shelby Cobra.
Tips for Investing in Iconic Classic CarsThe good news for collectors is that iconic classic cars are typically solid investments. Great muscle cars from the 1960s and 1970s are unlikely to plummet in value. It’s also important to remember that certain cars like the Mustang and Camaro are so popular and well-known in part because manufacturers have built hundreds –– if not thousands –– of variations over the years. So if you really want a Ford Mustang, but can’t afford the ‘67 version, you may be able to find a more affordable model from a different year. Lastly, iconic classic cars may be easier to repair and restore, since parts should be fairly accessible, and most classic car professionals have experience working with Chargers, Cobras, Chevelles, etc. Whether you’re a new collector or a long-time enthusiast, though, ionic classic cars have something to offer everyone.
