Classic Cars with Modern Technology: A Closer Look

classic cars with modern technologyDriving a classic car for the first time is a thrilling experience. However, it can also be a little unnerving. That’s because cars built in the 1950s, 60s, and 70s lack many of the modern features that we take for granted today. In fact, getting around in a classic car can actually prove quite difficult if you’re not used to the way older cars handle. This is just one of the reasons many classic-car enthusiasts have begun to install modern tech into their vintage vehicles. Classic cars with modern technology have become increasingly popular over the past few years, which is why we’re going to take an in-depth look at the process today.

Stock Restorations, Restomods, & Pro-Touring

First, it’s important that we define a few terms. Stock restorations refer to cars built solely with original parts. The intention of a stock restoration is to return a car to the way it was when it was brand new –– as if it had just come off the assembly line.

Restomods and pro-touring classic cars, by contrast, involve both restoring a vehicle through traditional practices and also modifying it with new parts. This means that these classic cars contain both original and aftermarket parts. A few ways car owners typically update classic cars include:

  • Modern brakes
  • Power steering
  • Fuel-engine modifications
  • New transmission
  • Coil-over shocks

Why are Restomods so Popular?

As mentioned above, just operating a classic car can often pose a challenge for modern drivers. Drum brakes, no power steering, tons of body roll –– all of these factors make driving a classic car regularly inconvenient at best and impractical at worst. Modern technology makes old cars safer and easier to drive, as well as improving their fuel efficiency. However, that’s not the only reason why restomods and pro-touring cars are so prevalent. The fact is that finding original, stock parts for classic cars that are over 50 years old can be a difficult and expensive process. Lastly, many car owners find that restoring a classic car with some modern amenities actually increases its resale value. (Remember, a number of factors will influence resale value.)

Are there Any Drawbacks to Modern Tech?

Plenty of people love restomods and would argue that there’s no downside to adding modern features to a classic car. Yet, there are certain contingents within the classic-car community who insist on stock restorations. And it’s worth noting that including modern parts in some classic cars will disqualify them from appearing in certain trade shows.

At the end of the day, modern technology improves classic car performance, safety, drive-ability, comfort, and often, extends the life of a classic car for many years. There’s something to be said for painstakingly restoring a car to its original specifications. But it’s also easy to see why restomods and pro-touring have an avid following.
